How Pop came about

Pop Music, a modern term for popular music, was originated in its most modern form, within the 1950's. David Hatch and Stephen Milward wrote a book called "An Analytical History of Pop Music' This book provided the common definition of pop music "a body of music which is distinguishable from popular, jazz and folk musics". Pop music now a days conform roughly to the ideal music songs and music videos. Pop songs commonly obtain short - mid length songs formed in to a simple repetitive rhythm. this makes the music easier to remember therefore it becomes well know more rapidly. An example of this is Don McLean's "American Pie." It was edited down from its original 8 1/2 minutes length to just over 4 minutes for radio airplay. Here are examples, from the original video done by Don McLean and the modern day version, done by Madonna.

You can see and hear that Madonna has made this video and song more modern and pop like through her choice of music plus changing the length of the song. Shortening the songs to roughly the same length as common pop songs. This therefore makes it more attractive to the younger viewers. Also using photo shoot images of her within the video is a way of conforming to other recent pop music videos. Madonna is fairly known for producing modern day versions of older songs.
