Floria Sigismondi

Floria Sigismondi

Floria Sigismondi is a very creative director and photographer, and she directed the most influencial music video that has inspiried my idea for my music video. This video was done by Pink - try.

This video inspired my idea of my music video becuase of the contempery dancing which portray a story between the couple, This is shown as a showcase as well as a narraative which is the two type of video's I am including within my own. Also the use of coloured powder that represensts harm to the person.

Floria Sigicmondi also directed, Katey Perry's video ET

This video shows alot of creativity through special effects there fore making this video a spectacal however also a showcase. I would love to be able to produce this within my own music video however the amount of technology I can use limits my production therefore I am not able to do this. However its very influencial.

Marc Webb

Marc Webb

Marc Webb is a film and music video director. He done many music videos for All American Rejects such as; Give you Hell. Also for Green Day - 21 Guns

As you see from this music video that it shows a organised narrative with a mixture of shots, as well as a showcase video of the artist. However this music video doesnt show me any inspiration for my own music video.
This video interest me becuase I enjoy the effect of the couple within the room that is under attack. I feel that its very effective towards the audience.

Micky Smith

Micky Smith

Micky Smith directed many music videos, most of them have fallen in the genre of narrative stories. He most commonly directs videos for Ben Howard. Here a few example:

As you can see within this music video, it is not much of a narrative it shows more footage of the artist therefore it is classified as a showcase video. This was mainly done through th shots of concerts of his own adn the way he see's like through his opinion. Micky Smith uses effects just as making the footage blury and then into focus this give it a move realistic feel to the footage there for having a greater effect ont he audience.

Micky Smith also did Ben Howards music video of "Old Pine" :

This is a similar video, how ever its more of a  showcase, its constantly viewing the artist for pormotional purposes. However a few of the shots especially with the establishing shot of the sky within the trees, this shot particularlly has grapped my attention and inspiried my music video.

Philip Andelman

Philip Andelman

Philip Andelman was born in 1977, he did not do many music videos until the year 2007 where he started directing with Kelly Rowland on her song "Work" :

From this video you can see that he has made the editing cuts to the beat of the music to give it a more pop like feel to it. Also does a variation of shots, close ups, mid shots and long shots. this is to promote the artist in everyway he can.

He also did a music video for Taylor Swift :

This music video has a more narrative look to it then Kelly Rowland's Work. However its still a showcase video. Once again Philip variates his shots.

I personally like the way Philip directed his music video's and it has inspiriedidea for my own music video. I would liek to variate my shots so the audience understand how they feel and connect with the surroundings.

Anthony Mandler is a music video director, who has written and directed music videos for several artists. His most notable and frequent collaborator is Rihanna. Anthony directed Rihanna's video from her early singles such as Unfaithful :

Also with her newest videos such as California King Bed:

As you can see from both theses videos, Anthony Mandler has created 2 similar narrative music videos showing a journey of a relationship.Aswell as Anthony been able to create narratives these two msuic videos are also strong showcase, never taking the eye of the artists.

This is specifically shown through another music ivdeo he directed Maneater by Nelly Furtadao

The way Anthony Mandler shows  his shwocase video's has inspired my own music video, Giving me new ideas on what shots I should use to get a clear images of a dancer.

My five directors are:
  • Anthony Mandler
  • Kyle Anderson
  • Micky Smith
  • Marc Webb
  • Floria Sigismondi

Classical - 2

William Tell - Overture

This piece of classical music however its more upbeat and repetitive but very famous, and once again you see their is no lyrics to go along with the melody. This is a feature of classical music that is recognized. However this genre of music is not part of my original plan there fore i will not be using this with my music video.

Classical - 1

Morning song - Grieg - Morgenstimmung

As you can hear, there is no lyrics within this typical classical melody. Also you can tell by the music that it is mostly played by the strings and woodwinds of a orchestra. This music I enjoy , and feel that is has a great impact on the audience, also it doesn't influence the idea of the song by invading it with lyrics it lets the audience picture their own idea they feel that matches within the melody. However i do no feel it coordinates with my own idea of a music video, therefore i will not be using this music within my music video. On the other hand, the images of the sun and the settings have inspired my idea of where to place my main singer, and will be using this idea within my video.

How Classical Music Came About

 How Classical Music Came About

The term "classical music" did not appear until the early 19th century, in an attempt to "canonize" the period from Johann Sebastian Bach to Beethoven as a golden age. The earliest reference to "classical music" recorded by the Oxford English dictionary is from about 1836.
Classical music, is seen as literature but into song, however its usual that classical music doesn't consist of lyrics to its melody.

Most classical music is performed by an orchestra, an orchestra consists of; strings such as violins, cellos double bass's. Woodwinds; flutes, clarinets, bassoons and oboe. Brass; trumpets, french horns, trombone and tuba's and finally percussion: cymbals, bass drum, gongs and xylophones.

Heavy Metal - 2

Anthrax -Anti - Social

From this video you clearly see the amplified guitars and the flashing lights to create a madness atmosphere that contributes to the heavy metal scenery. This genre of music however I do not feel that it is appropriate for my idea of my own music video. It does not convey a meaning across to the audience which is my main idea of my music video.

Heavy Metal - 1

Duality - Slipknot

As you can see from this video that it consists of loud amplified music as well as shrieking singing. Also as well as the music the artists create a sinister atmosphere by wearing masks this creates a dark effect towards the audience.  The video gives of the effect of anger and emotion, this is the idea of heavy metal to portray strong views on life, this video successfully does this by interacting with the audience. I would not like to include this within my music video because I feel it doesn't not fit with my original idea, plus I am not to certain that this type of music connects to the majority of the audience.

How Heavy Metal Came About

Heavy Metal

Heavy metal developed within the time of 1960's and 1970's. This music typically consists of, over amplified sounds from guitar solos also including loud emphasised beats. Heavy metal lyrics and performance styles are generally associated with masculinity and machismo.
Sub - genre:
  • Black Metal - Black metal is an extreme sub-genre of heavy metal. Common traits include fast tempo, shrieked vocals highly distorted guitars played with tremolo picking, blast beat drumming, raw recording, and unconventional song structure.

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_subgenres

  • Folk Metal - Folk metal is a sub-genre of heavy metal that developed in Europe during the 1990s. As the name suggests, the genre is a fusion of heavy metal with traditional folk music. This includes the widespread use of folk instruments and, to a lesser extent, traditional singing styles (for example, Dutch Heidevolk, Danish Sylvatica and Spanish Stone of Erech).

Dance - 2

Gangman Style - PSY

This song however if significantly different compared to usual dance music videos and it song. For starters it is being performed with a different language however because of its repetitive rhythm and repetitive words such as "gangman style" it makes the song extremely re-memorable. Similarly with other dance video's it as a specific dance move with it, this therefore makes you wanna dance its specific dance move classifying it as a dance music video.  However, even though this music and video is enjoyable I don't feel it will connect with the audience in the way I have originally planned.

Dance - 1

Little Bad Girl - David Guetta ft Taio Cruz and Ludacris

This music video is a perfect example of dance music, as you can see there is plenty of techno sounds and raves and flashing lights as if in a club. Also surrounded by people dancing. This gives the audience the effect of a dancing vibe that changes there mood and also by using special effects such as the footage of the world it gives a "any thing is possible" thought towards dance music. This music video I specifically enjoy becuases of the fast beats within the music and hwo the cuts go with the beat making the music video corrdinate with the song. However I would not want to put this into  my own video becuase the cuts are too fast there fore it would not fit in with my choice of music.

How Dance Music Came About

Dance music is music composed specifically to facilitate or accompany dancing . It can be either a whole musical piece or part of a larger musical arrangement. In terms of performance, the major categories are live dance music and recorded dance music. Dance music was introduced at the time of 1981.

Dance music can frequently be apart of pop music,  however can also come under some sub-genres such as; Dub-step and electronic.

Here is a Dub - step example;

As you can tell from this video that the music is full of drops and techno differences then a normal repetitive beat that is in mainstream music such as pop.  Music video like this tend to invovle flashing lights, in raves where there are fast beats and loud bass's

Country - 2

Somebody Like You - Keith Urban

Within this music video you can here the first intrument which is a banjo this is a significant instrument to the country music, striaght away we are aware of this. In addition we see the surroundings from the birds eye view shot which also establishes the surroundings of dusty desert once again showing the audience that its western music. This inspired my music video because of the lighting. The lighting within this video is like a sweet sunset and I feel that it creates a nice sensual feeling around the artist. Within my music video I am now planning to only show my artist when the scenery is the sun light scenery.

Country - 1

These Boots are Made for Walking - Jessica Simpson

As you can see this music video has the surroundings of the American West, such as; saloon bars, cow boys and dusty cow towns. This is to give the effect of a more western style of music. There are instruments that also create the atmosphere of western country music such as; acoustic guitars, harmonicas and ukuleles. This music video gave me the idea of within my music video to show all different type of people, from people dressed in western to people dressed in ski wear, from complete opposites sides of the worlds this is to create a more equal relationship between everyone around the world, just  how the country music gives the audience but because I can use country music within my video, I thought this would be more of a better idea..

How Country Music Came About

Country music originated in south American in the 1920's. This was formed in the time of the western Americans, where there was salon bars, cow towns and cowboys. Country music often consists of ballads and dance tunes with generally simple forms and harmonies accompanied by mostly string instruments such as acoustic guitars, harmonicas and banjos.

Country music normally expresses life that's not surrounded by money unlike pop music where its all about showing off how much you have. I personally enjoy this type of music and would like to include it within my music video because it gives a sense of equality towards the audience that makes them feel like they can generally enjoy the music it self not just what is in the music video. However country music videos normally set there surrondings around the time western music was created, this is not the setting i have planned for my music video therefore i will not put it with my music video.

Pop - 3

Here are another few examples of pop music video's:

Once again you can see the bright colours and the over exaggeration within the expressions to attract new viewers to the music. This music videos has most of the feature that I have planned for my own music videos such as; Bight colours, obvious expressions shown through mid long shots and close up. However the only problem within this video is that its completely showcase instead of narrative. Showcase is where the music video is based around the artist and the artist is the most important person on the screen.

However this music video, Justin Bieber - "As long As You Love Me" displays a narrative as well as showcase video. After watching this video I have made a slight change within my music video to be not just narrative but also showcase so I can promote my artist within my video.

Pop - 2

More recent music videos no longer take use of their videos to convey their moral meaning of their songs for example The Beatles they were a high successful band that used their videos to purposely display them playing their own music.

How ever you can see a distinctive difference from The Beatles video compared to Flo Rida -Whistle. You can see that within this video that as an artist he is showing of how much money he makes, from the settings of exotic beaches, huge house's with swimming pools, big gold jewellery and half naked women. Being in a school environment there are some limitations of what I can do to relate to a pop music video as much as possible. This music video is a prim example of that. Women in bikinis are becoming more and more frequent within pop music videos, this limits how far I can go within my original idea.

Pop - 1

Lil Mix - Wings

Most pop music videos is all about the mainstream type of music, and type of fashion. The videos are focused on the singer/s, what they are wearing, what they look like. For example Lil Mix - Wings . This video as you can see, they have frequent close ups, also mid long shots to show off their outfits portraying their amount of money and fashion sense. This music video is a perfect example of my idea of my own music video. I am planning to use mid long shots and close up to convey the expression of my singers within the video, doing this will help the emotion from the song to the audience. Also using mid-long shots, and even long shots are important within a pop video this is done for a promotional purpose, to show of the fashion of the artist.

How Pop came about

Pop Music, a modern term for popular music, was originated in its most modern form, within the 1950's. David Hatch and Stephen Milward wrote a book called "An Analytical History of Pop Music' This book provided the common definition of pop music "a body of music which is distinguishable from popular, jazz and folk musics". Pop music now a days conform roughly to the ideal music songs and music videos. Pop songs commonly obtain short - mid length songs formed in to a simple repetitive rhythm. this makes the music easier to remember therefore it becomes well know more rapidly. An example of this is Don McLean's "American Pie." It was edited down from its original 8 1/2 minutes length to just over 4 minutes for radio airplay. Here are examples, from the original video done by Don McLean and the modern day version, done by Madonna.

You can see and hear that Madonna has made this video and song more modern and pop like through her choice of music plus changing the length of the song. Shortening the songs to roughly the same length as common pop songs. This therefore makes it more attractive to the younger viewers. Also using photo shoot images of her within the video is a way of conforming to other recent pop music videos. Madonna is fairly known for producing modern day versions of older songs.

Different Types of Genre's

Genre is a term to discribe a type of style, in this case its the different style of music, here are the main steriotypical genre I am going to research:

Pop:  Pop music is the term for "popular music" this style changes constantly, its known as the mainstream, this line of music makes the most money, however its known for it corruption and influence on the younger generation.

Rap: genre of African-American music of the 1980s and 1990s in which rhyming lyrics are chanted to a musical accompaniment; several forms of rap have emerged.

Heavy Metal: loud and harsh sounding rock music with a strong beat; lyrics usually involve violent or fantastic imagery.

Emo: is a style of rock music typically characterized by melodic musicianship and expressive, often confessional lyrics. It originated in the mid-1980s hardcore punk movement of Washington, D.C.

Folk: Music that originates in traditional popular culture or that is written in such a style. Folk music is typically of unknown authorship and is transmitted orally from generation to generation

Generic Convention of Music Videos

In creating a music video, you need to understand all the essentials to be able to come out with an impressive final piece. This involves:

Camera Movement:
  • Shots: Different types of shots, close up, mid shots, long shots establishing shots, over the shoulder shots. Each of these give a different effect towards the audience, meaning that it is vital that the shots you use is the right shot for that moment of the music video.
  •  Angles: Each angle also has a great impact towards the audience, high angle, low angle, reverse angle.
  • Both shot and Angle, need to be analysed and shown where they need to be. For example: close up, this is used to show expressions in this case my artist. However establishing shot this is to set the scene of where my music video will be taking place. Angles, with a high angle is to represent a sense of power however a low angle is to express the low sense of status.
  • Within my music video I am planing to do a variety of  shots this is to make sure that my audience create a connection with the actors within my music video as well as the artist. But to also create a sense of atmosphere.

Editing:

  • Cuts: cuts are made to change the order of your footage, this can have a great deal of effect towards your audience for example if your using a fast beat song, then your cuts should usually keep in time with the song and do cuts per each best keeping it fast pace otherwise this can have a bad impact towards your music video.
  • Transitions: transitions are they way you change from cut to cut, you can use wipes and fades. This gives the effect of the type of music video you are trying to portray. For example within my music video I am trying to portray a emotional link between the audience and actors within the music video therefore my transition will be slow. However I will vary my speed of tranisitons to keep up with the tempo of the song.

Spectacle Music Video - 3

Of Monsters and Men -Little Talks

This music video is a prime example of a spectacle video. This is shown through the animations that is constantly displayed through out the music video. However this music video is a narrative and showcase as well as a spectacle, this is because of the constant shots of the artist as well as telling a dream like story of going through a journey through out the video. This video has influenced my own by how showing me different ways I can present my artist. It inspired the all the different way I can take shots of my artist, close ups and mid long shots have been my main influence on my artist instead of distant extreme long shots. This I feel will give more of a personal effect towards my audience therefore promoting their music more.

Spectacal Music Video - 2

Just Like A Pill - Pink

This music video shows a spectacal video crossed with a showcase video this is through multiple effects, mianly through the different transitions that are used from shot to shot. This makes the music video more quirky and different then a usual video. Also within the music video at the beginning there a panning shot cross a piano whic is playing on its own, this therefore gives it the name of being a spectacal music video. As well as this video being a spectacal video it is also a showcase this is shown through the constant shots of the artist through out the video. The spectacal side of the video, with the unusal shots and the transistions, this is what I had orginally planned for my own music video. However after doing more research into spectacal video's I would rather do showcase and narrative. This is becuase I feel that have a more powerful affect on the audience.

Spectacal Music Video - 1

A Thousand Miles - Vanessa Carlton

Speactle is special effects, creative, playing with scale, celebration of special effects and technology, quirky, unusual, weird and creative freedom but different. Particularlly this video, within this video Vanessa used a green screen for majority of this music video for her background this had the effect on the audience by taking them through a journey of different sites of america and how within her lyrics it describes her going  "a thousand miles" for her journey. This has the effect of her audience coming on the journey with her. This music video inspiried me with my own music video, giving me the idea of wanting to take my audience on a journey. However within my music video I dont want it to be as litreral as Vanessa's is.

Showcase Music Video - 3

The Pussycats Dolls - When i Grow Up

This music video, expresses a showcase video by showing the artist's in the majority of the shots this is to enhance the publicity of the band. Also the producer/artists have choosen to wear clothing that is farily explicitlly this is done for the affect of the audience. The music industry does tend to use sex scenes or half naked women through out there music videos this has progressed over the time music as become more and more modern. However this doesnt just come from the music industy though, this is done becuase of the over sexualisation of the entire community. The truth is that sex sells well within the media. It has a significant effect on the audience and the younger generation. However this does give my own music video a limit, I can not explicit a pupil or of anyone that I know for that matter. However this idea was not part of my brief at the beginning of my research of my music video.

Showcase Music Video - 2

Atomic Kitten - Eternal flame

This a perfect example of a showcase video, as you can see all the attention is on the band together and singularly. This is used to promote their work this is done within several ways. The artist are dressed specifically to show of their bodies, this has an effect towards the audience for both woman and men, woman want to be them, men want them. This there fore leads to them selling more albums and making more money. Also taking close up shot of their faces creates a connection between the band and the audience this mean that the audience can form a relationship and feel like they know what the artist is saying and making the video more personal. This video relates to my blog specifically because within my video I want my artist to form a connection with the audience however I do not want the video to be all about them. I want my artist to be explaining a statement and a story that connects him with the audience, so that it has the effect that the audience feels like they are as equal and think the same as the artist.

Showcase Music Video - 1

 Ben Howard - Only Love

A showcase music video is to promote the band as much as possible. This is done through showing images of the band or artist frequently or even constantly. Ben Howard does this successfully within the music video of "Only Love". This is shown through the constant images of the artist, doing this has a great effect on the audience. It gets the audience to question what the artist its like, its vital now a days to have a memorable video, this is because now its got a lot more easier to get music for free and download therefore if the artist has a memorable video or a video that intrigues the audience, its more likely they'll want to watch it over again. This video displays a simple showcase, conveying  the lyrics in a slightly more complex way compared to what they could of been told like. This video has inspired my idea of my own music video by making want to show a cross over of narrative - telling a story as well as Showcase. Also to convey the unexpected of the lyrics.
